Richard Costello

My work history is in Youth and Community Development, which I've been involved in since 1998, in Belfast and Dublin. I have an informal professional approach in supporting organisations, individuals and communities experiencing the challenges of poverty, isolation and marginalisation. I have always worked to support and create positive change within and among groups tackling these issues. In my time I have worked with a broad range of groups, from vulnerable men, people in addiction, lone parents, ex-prisoners, older people, those living with disability, young marginalised people and victims of crime, to name some.

I have worked for a variety of organisations, from small community based groups to large Voluntary groups. This has given me valuable insight and experience of how the size, scale and focus of an organisation can influence the way they do their work and its impact.

My particular specialty and experience is in Facilitation, particularly in relation to Community and Voluntary organisations focusing on issue based work, which addresses some of the impacts of poverty for people and communities. I have completed the Group Consensus Methods, Action Planning and Participatory Strategic Planning Training delivered by ICA:UK which provides an approach to working with groups by focusing on full participation, democratic decision making and shared consensus. In my working life I have facilitated many groups to explore, resolve and develop the challenges they  face. I am very enthusiastic about the power that great facilitation has in transforming people, organisations and communities; by providing a strong facilitated support process I have seen remarkable things achieved by people and their organisations.

I also have extensive experience in the area of Community-led Community Safety, which looks at how local people can be central to reducing crime, the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour where they live and work. I have attended several training and skills development sessions which have enhanced my ability to work on these issues.
